ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Like many Greeks left unemployed by their country’s economic tailspin, Dimitris Spachos finds it easier to talk about his nation’s problems than his own.

Enormous debt accumulated over decades sent the country into a recession so deep it kills 200 businesses and 900 jobs every day. Elections this month failed to produce a government, and Greeks will vote again in June. Meanwhile, life for most Greeks continues to get worse.

“Every day I see more people sleeping rough on the street,” said Spachos, 72. “They can’t even wash their clothes or themselves. … It worries me.”

Spachos, who has been staying with different friends in recent months, may soon join them. A former doctor, he could not afford to retire and found work as a hospital orderly. But as Greece’s woes mounted so did his own, and he lost his job, then two more: one as a gardener and one as a groundskeeper.

Now, he is unemployed and homeless, and spoke this week at a municipal soup kitchen, where he ate a plastic bowl of bean soup, a thick slice of bread and a banana.

“I am ashamed to be here,” Spachos said, his eyes filling with tears. “My heart is broken.”

“Greeks have fight in them, so maybe things will improve in a couple of years,” he said, opening his shirt to reveal a scar from surgery to implant a pacemaker. “But I won’t be around to see it.”

Here is a look at some of Greece’s problems as it struggles to pay its debts:

UNEMPLOYMENT

Over the past three years unemployment has roughly doubled, and Greece has lost more than 10 percent of its output.

Nearly 320,000 people lost their jobs in the 12-month period ending in February, pushing the unemployment rate to 22 percent. Greece’s 3.8 million employed people are supporting the 4.5 million who don’t work — 1.1 million officially unemployed and 3.4 million considered financially inactive.

BUSINESS WOES

Some 80,000 businesses were shuttered last year, and 136,000 more are expected to fail in 2012, according to estimates from the Athens Chamber of Commerce.

“Out of 900,000 businesses currently operating, that would be a major blow,” said Constantine Michalos, the chamber’s president. “I fear the (next) government may be called upon to administer the ruins of the Greek economy.”

CRIME

The Public Order Ministry has reported an increase in nearly all categories of crime between 2010 and 2011, with murder up 5 percent and armed robberies in occupied homes up 110 percent.

HOMELESSNESSS

Homelessness, the most visible sign of Greece’s financial despair, has risen by around 25 percent, according to estimates by a state-funded relief agency. That number includes more people from traditionally stable background such as high school and university graduates.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Greece’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported 954 new HIV infections in 2011, a 57 percent increase from the previous year. It attributes most of the rise to drug use.

DEPRESSION

All these problems have led to a general rise in depression. According to several state-funded health and relief agencies, rates of suicide, drug dependency and depression have all broadly risen by 20 to 25 percent since the financial crisis hit in late 2009.

The job of the Tooth Fairy is really quite challenging. How did the tooth fairy ever get teeth out from under pillows and leave money under the pillows of sleeping children? Imagine all of this without ever being seen? I thought that tooth fairy boxes were a good idea to keep those teeth and quarters out of the bed. We bought little ceramic ones. They were so cute. They looked like little smiling teeth, one with a blue bow and the other with a pink bow. However, the tooth fairy made a rare appearance to tell me a secret. It is almost impossible to lift the lid and dig the tooth out of a ceramic box, drop money into a ceramic box and return the lid without making a LOT of noise. I hear you, Tooth Fairy. I wondered what could we do to make the job of the Tooth Fairy easier?

The answer of course was potato chips. Potato chips are often the answer, aren’t they? My daughter was attending daily rehearsals for Beauty and the Beast where single serving snacks were for sale for little beauties and little beasts. The evidence on the snack tables made one thing clear. Single serving potato chips are the favorite snacks of little dancing forks and spoons. I kept seeing those little white containers each day with their curved sides and their convex bottom and one day it became perfectly clear to me what these little empty chip containers looked like. They looked exactly like little teeth. I knew I had a lead on a new, Tooth Fairy friendly box.

How can you turn a single serving chip cup into a Tooth Fairy box?

It’s really quite simple because as you can see from the photo, the shape just already looks like a tooth. There’s no lid which really makes the job of the Tooth Fairy quite easy.

Materials:

One clean single serving chip cup per craft

Glue or hot glue gun

Fabric or felt

Letter stickers

With a little scrap of felt or fabric you can make a special soft landing pad for that revered pulled tooth. It also makes a quiet fall for those coins too.

Use letter stickers along the side to personalize the Tooth Fairy cup for each little snaggle tooth.

A Tooth Fairy cup is a fun craft for kindergarteners or first graders that are getting ready to lose those first teeth. It’s also a great craft for February to celebrate Dental Health month.

The Nopalea cactus is one of the most sexy drinks out on the market today. If you haven’t heard of it, take a look into it or just continue to read this post. Without knowing about it, I did a little research into the drink and here are my findings.

They use the juices of the nopal cactus to create a healing drink that fixes a lot of the problems that people are having with their health. For instance, the inflammation that runs rampant throughout our society is something that we all need to take care of on a regular basis – but do we? The answer is probably not. We need something like this drink to help curb the inflammation in our bodies so we can go on to live a happier and healthier life and be extremely satisfied with our own personal health. There isn’t a lot of time to do things like exercise all the time and eat extremely healthy – so just drink a really delicious drink instead! It offers the same benefits but costs less time and money, and I don’t know anyone else in the world who wouldn’t argue that that is a very good thing for your mind, body and spirit.

Apple is planning on implementing a new, smaller dock connector, according to a report by iMore. The site has been reliable in the past and correctly predicted the release of an LTE equipped iPad. iMore also reported that Apple is still in the prototyping phase for the next iPhone and that the design is not yet set in stone.

Despite some rumors to the contrary, according to our sources Apple still hasn’t finalized the design of the next generation iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple ends up calling iPhone 5,1). No giant screen. No 16:9 aspect ratio. No metal back.

[…]

Once again we’re hearing that if the screen size does change, it won’t be by a lot (no larger than 4-inches). We’ve heard nothing to indicate a planned change in the aspect ratio either way (and such a change still doesn’t make much sense to us).

iLounge previously claimed that the next iPhone would have a smaller, redesigned dock connector as well as a 4″ screen that is larger in height only — this would result in an adjustment to the screen’s aspect ratio. The iPhone 4′s design has served Apple very well, with the company selling millions upon millions of units. It is possible that the company will choose to stick with the successful design, albeit with some minor changes, rather than a wholesale redesign.

Other recent iPhone rumors include a claims that the next iPhone will launch in September; another that it would use the same micro-SIM as current iPhones, rather than a new nano-SIM concept; and that the next iPhone will retain its physical home button — a claim that iMore reiterates.

Vice President Joe Biden’s comments over the weekend that he is “absolutely comfortable” with same-sex marriage has put pressure on his boss and prominent Democrats to define their positions on the subject. When pressed Tuesday, U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine danced around the issue: He would not come out in support of gay marriage, but said he fully backed “relationship equality.”

“The underlying issue is: Should committed couples have the same legal rights and responsibilities? And the answer to that is an unequivocal yes,” Kaine told reporters at a breakfast briefing sponsored by the centrist think tank The Third Way. Kaine, a former Virginia governor who most recently served as Democratic National Committee chairman, said he campaigned against a Virginia amendment banning gay marriage in 2006 because he believed the law left “committed couples” without the same legal protections as everyone else.

Kaine is running against another former governor, Republican George Allen, for the Old Dominion Senate seat held by Democrat Jim Webb, who is retiring. A new Washington Post poll released Tuesday finds the pair in a dead heat, each attracting 46 percent of the support. The Virginia race will be among the most competitive in the county, and could determine which party controls the upper chamber of Congress next year. (To underscore the closeness of the contest, the Post poll found Kaine and Allen in a tie at 46 percent one year ago.)

Gay marriage has not been an issue in the Virginia race. But Biden’s comments and the president’s so-called “evolving” stance on the issue drew reporters to question where Kaine, who is running as a “close friend and supporter” of the president, stands.

“I believe in the legal equality of relationships,” Kaine said Tuesday. “The debate about, is it marriage? Is it civil union? Is it domestic partnership? I kind of let that one go and just say the legal issue is: Should committed couples be treated the same by law? And I think the answer is yes.”

Kaine, a devout Catholic, said churches should be able to “make their own decisions about which relationship they want to celebrate,” but that “as a matter of law, I do fundamentally believe couples should be treated equally.” Kaine approaches abortion rights in a similar way. He personally opposes abortion but does not believe government should make that decision for women. He disagreed with President Obama’s original health care mandate that religious employers provide contraceptive coverage in their insurance plans, asking to broaden exemptions for such institutions. The White House’s later adjustment met his requirements.

A Harvard law school graduate who spent the early part of his career as a civil rights attorney, Kaine approaches the issue of gay marriage with that kind of legal perspective, his campaign would argue. But when asked whether gay marriage is a civil right, he returned to his terminology. “Yeah, but what I would say is: Relationship equality is a civil right. I believe that.“ But should gay couples be allowed to apply for a marriage license? “There should be a license that would entitle a committed couple to have the same rights as a married couple,” Kaine said. “I think the labels actually get in the way of the issue.”

The moderator of the discussion pointed out that labels are the issue surrounding same-sex marriage. A reporter asked whether it would be accurate to describe Kaine as a supporter of gay marriage. “Just say I’m for relationship equality,” he said.

The debate over whether members of the same sex should be allowed to marry entered the national news cycle this week following Biden’s comments. But it is also somewhat of a specter for Democrats. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who will chair the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina later this year, proposed the addition of marriage equality to the party’s platform.

When asked if he agreed, Kaine said he hoped his party would affirm the issue in the terms he described. “What you call it and how you label it and how you describe it is not unimportant; it is important,” he admitted. “But I think the most important issue, really, is the issue of legal equality, relationship equality, and I think that is definitely a unifier on the Democratic side.”

Voters in North Carolina, a state Obama hopes to win again after taking it by a narrow margin four years ago, on Tuesday are expected to support a ban on same-sex marriage in the state. The president is walking a fine line on the issue, and risks alienating voters on both sides. Unlike Biden and other prominent Democrats, including Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Obama has not endorsed same-sex marriage. Instead, the White House characterizes his views as “evolving.”

“People like to ding the president on that word,” Kaine said Tuesday. “The answer is that’s exactly what’s happening in our society.”

The number of Americans who filed for jobless aid dropped last week, giving some who rely on such statistics a glimmer of hope about what’s going on in the employment market. The number of claims for state unemployment benefits dropped by 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 365,000, according to the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). What should be noted, however, is that seasonal adjustments, in and of themselves, can sometimes be inaccurate, and this inaccuracy is multiplied when warm weather occurs during the winter, as happened in 2012.

Also worth noting is that unemployment numbers are released and then revised about a week later – the headline number that is released is on the front page of business sections, while the revisions are the equivalent of 25th-page retractions, so that not much attention is paid to the fact that things are as bleak as they are.

Add to this the fact that the independent employment numbers of ADP, a private company, indicated that April saw the fewest jobs created in 7 months, and you have a bit of a mixed message, at best. Since ADP doesn’t benefit from fudged employment numbers (as politicians benefit when BLS mis-reports and “massages” their numbers), one must generally consider the ADP numbers to be more accurate. Such is life in the world of economic indicators – those controlled by the government cannot generally be trusted. The same, of course, is true of inflation numbers put forth by the Fed, but that’s a story for another day.

“Dancing with the Stars” 2012 resumed April 30 with Classical Night, a slate of routines performed to the sounds of, well duh, classical music. By night’s end, nine more dances were in the books and a new leader emerged in TV personality Maria Menounos, who snagged the first perfect score of the season. Here’s a full recap.

The show opened with a performance by the “DWTS” troupe, set to the sounds of some serious violin-action by Joshua Bell. And then the seven remaining couples descended into the ballroom. Quick hit impressions? Katherine Jenkins looked a little scary in the Thor get-up. And Maria Menounos is teeny tiny.

Speaking of the opera singer, Katherine and partner Mark Ballas were up first to perform their individual dance, which happened to be the sexy Rumba. During rehearsals, Katherine shared that she first discovered classical music as an early teen. She called “marrying the Rumba with classical music” a challenge, but promised to “give it a good go”. Mark worked to make their routine “classy” but also “sensual”, and Katherine wanted to perform “an elegant, classy Rumba”. Hmm, sounds like a challenge indeed.

The two performed their Rumba to the sounds of Pachelbel’s Canon. Katherine’s costume was a little hefty-looking and distracting with what looked like heavy gold chains over her back, but there was indeed a lovely elegance about the whole thing. It was a good start to the evening.

Head judge Len Goodman called it “a classic Rumba” and praised them for being “totally in keeping with the music”. Bruno Tonioli called Katherine “the embodiment of power and beauty” and “literally the girl on top” all the time, but wished it could’ve been “a bit raunchier” to “get my juices going”. But still, he called it “technically superb”. Carrie Ann Inaba called her the best technician in the competition, but knocked her for not putting more “true heat” and “chemistry” into the dance.

Backstage with Brooke Burke, Katherine called the “DWTS” experience “amazing” and was pleased to be performing on Classical Night.

Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas’ week 7 scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27.

Hmph. Had that dance happened later in the show, it would’ve scored better. Mark my words. Actress Melissa Gilbert kept things moving with an Argentine Tango. Her injured partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy called his brother Val into rehearsals as a back-up, and Melissa felt the pressure of the situation. Still, despite the challenges, she asserted that “Maks is still my man”.

Mozart’s peppy “Marriage of Figaro” served as the music for the couple’s dance, which was probably one of the fastest Argentine Tangos I’ve ever seen. She zoom, zoom, zoomed all over the place. Good, because it showed she has good endurance. Bad because she looked frenetic again.

Bruno called Melissa “extremely brave” to “navigate the tempos of Mozart” but said she looked like she was “riding the Cyclone on Coney Island at times”. He called it “messy”. Carrie Ann likened it to “Cirque du Soleil went terribly wrong”. (Maks looked like his head was going to blow up.) Len appreciated how they’d portrayed the music’s crescendo’s with the lifts, but found it too intense.

Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s week 7 scores: 7, 7, 7 = 21.

No disrespect to either of them, but the scores were fair.

Third in line to perform were telenovela star William Levy and Cheryl Burke. The two prepped their Viennese Waltz, and Cheryl promised to include “enough content” for the judges. William had trouble with his injured ankle, and wasn’t sure if he’d be able to handle the spins. Cheryl worried that their “whole routine could fall apart” if he struggled on show-night.

But as it turned out, things went a-okay for the pair. Child prodigy Jackie Evancho performed their music, “Ave Maria”, and they spun around the ballroom beautifully. I still see William throwing the occasional pancake hand, but methinks the judges won’t really notice.

Once she stopped drooling, Carrie Ann said “that is what I was looking for” and appreciate the content and dancing. She loved how he was able to “bring the romance to life”. Len said he wasn’t transported to Vienna, but said he was in Austria. He deemed it an “up” performance. Bruno said “you have captured the purity and the ethereality of the song” and praised him for putting his “heart and soul” into it.

William Levy and Cheryl Burke’s week 7 scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27.

Bottom two survivors Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower followed with an Argentine Tango. During rehearsals, Chelsie stressed the importance of being “flawless” and Roshon struggled with mastering the art of “being a man”. Val Chmerkovskiy paid him a visit to show him how to increase his manliness. Meh heh.

A musical version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” served as the backdrop for Roshon and Chelsie’s dance. (Which, I have to note, is the exact piece of music that may well have cost “American Idol” hopeful Colton Dixon his chance at the title. Just sayin’.) It was pretty good. It was hardly fair having him dance right after William, though!

Len appreciated the transitions into the lifts, but wished for stronger, less awkward feet. Bruno called him “Roshon the man” and asserted “size is not everything”, but agreed with Len that he needs more strength in his legs in order to ground his moves. Carrie Ann emerged from behind the table to give the young star a hug. She praised him for being steady on his feet and called the performance “fantastic”.

Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower’s week 7 scores: 9, 8, 8 = 25.

NFL star Donald Driver was up next with his Viennese Waltz. Partner Peta Murgatroyd vowed to really challenge the football player, who expressed a desire to be the first to score a perfect 30, with a professional grade routine. The very competitive Donald said he planned to “give more”.

Vittorio Grigolo hit the ballroom to perform the couple’s tune, Verdi’s “La Donna e Mobile”. Donald was certainly more twinkle toes than not, and the routine-ending spin was aewsome, but there was something awkward and forced about his footwork at times. He’s good. But it wasn’t a 30-scoring kind of dance. Bruno declared that he “loved it”. Carrie Ann admitted that she hadn’t seen a lift, though she suspected one had taken place. She appreciated the “regal quality” of the dance. Len likened him to a “dancing Ferrero Rocher” in his red coat, but appreciated his footwork.

Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd’s week 7 scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27.

Performing next were Maria Menounos and Derek Hough with a Paso Doble. Maria missed the usual “jovial” nature of their relationship during rehearsals, and was visibly hurt by some of Derek’s remarks. Derek admitted to getting frustrated with his partner at times, but called her “a fantastic dancer”. Maria hoped to use their “dynamic” relationship to perform an equally dynamic Paso.

Dressed in a striking red gown, Maria began her Paso Doble standing alone. Derek approached holding a stake, and the TV personality revealed her fangs. Oh, how lovely to play to a popular pop culture trend. Well played, D. Hough. Well-played. It was good. Maria really got into it. Actually, it was almost scary.

Carrie Ann said “that didn’t suck, my friend” and “you were so on fire… Katherine had better watch her back”. Len called it “sharp as a razor, crisp as a Pringle” and “I loved it”. Bruno declared “The Queen of the Damned is the Queen of the Night” and called it “spell-binding”.

Maria Menounos and Derek Hough’s week 7 scores: 10, 10, 10 = 30.

It was good, yeah, but come on. A Paso Doble set to that kind of powerful music? Not a big stretch. I can’t think of many contestants who couldn’t rock it.

Last up in the individual round were actor Jaleel White and Kym Johnson with a Viennese Waltz. During rehearsals, Kym presented Jaleel with a talking stuffed animals in honor of his solid week 6 Cha Cha. But that’s where the jokes ended. Kym explained that she needed to put “a lot of content” into their dance in order to do well, and Jaleel expressed confidence in her decisions, calling them “an incredible team”. He vowed to prove himself “the man to beat”. Uh, okay.

Wearing military style duds and a pink dress (respectively, of course), Jaleel and Kym danced to the sounds of “Did I Make the Most of Loving You”. It was good, but not stellar. There was something awkward about Jaleel’s movements at times. Can’t put my finger on it.

Len said “I liked it enough not to be cruel” but not enough to be kind. He cited a lack of footwork and thought “it didn’t quite work”. Bruno praised him for attempting a lot of content, but criticized him for not linking his motions. He liked it as “a story”. Carrie Ann assured him that he was “back in the game” and appreciated the storytelling, but cautioned him against “a cringy” hand.

Jaleel joked that he’d initially thought it was the “Vietnamese Waltz” and hoped the judges would “show a brother some love”.

Jaleel White and Kym Johnson’s week 7 scores: 8, 8, 8 = 24.

With the individual dances out of the way, Maria and Derek sit on top with their perfect 30. Three teams are in second with 27, and the other three are slightly behind. Well, okay, so Melissa and Maks are pretty far behind with 21. But no one’s so far behind that they’re definitely in the bottom two. Cool?

While the contestants ostensibly changed for round two, the uber fun Group Round, Jackie Evancho returned to sing once again. That girl has some serious pipes. This time, “DWTS” pros Karina Smirnoff and Tristan MacManus hoofed it in accompaniment.

Up next, a segment featuring the team selection process and rehearsals aired. Captains Katherine and William chose their teammates one at a time, with Katherine first choosing Maria; William opting for Donald; Katherine picking Jaleel; William nabbing Melissa; and Roshon winding up on Katherine’s team. Ouch, sucks to be the last guy standing.

All of the stars on Team Tango –Katherine’s team– stressed. A lot of blither-blather. And then they performed together, all wearing black suits. It started off with Katherine “directing” them as they all held violins and pretended to play. Very theatrical. The ladies’ spandex pants really showed off their legwork. Or lack thereof, in some cases, but I won’t dwell. It was fun. Heated.

Len praised Maria and Roshon as the stand-outs. He called it a mix of “the good, the bad and the ugly”. Bruno loved the creativity of the choreography. He appreciated Katherine’s Argentinian influence and enjoyed Roshon’s performance. Carrie Ann loved “the concept” and thought Roshon in particular excelled.

Katherine called it “a joy to work with” her teammates.

Team Tango’s scores: 10, 8, 9 = 27.

Post-scores, Derek shared that he thought they’d deserved 10s and Maria thanked the pros for the choreography. Each couple earned an additional 27 points on the night.

Last up for the evening were the remaining three couples with their Team Paso Doble. During rehearsals, the burly-man packed squad joked about being the manly group and dubbed their competitors “Team Diaper”. Yeah, that’s just awesome. Blech. They stressed over whether or not they should take off their shirts. Seriously? I hope it was a joke. Really.

It looked like a typical Paso from the get-go. Melissa looked frenetic as usual, but it’s hard to be the only non-pro gal in the group, I’m sure. William looked large and in charge. Peta looked like she was battling Donald for the large and in charge title. Then they guys all lost their shirts and did the requisite Paso cape swing. I don’t dig suspenders over bare chests. Ew.

Bruno declared “more muscle power than the avengers”, and the men responded by jumping onto the desk, but noted that they’d lost synch at times. Carrie Ann giggled “that was so much fun” and declared that it would “go down in history as the fan favorite Paso Doble”. Len noted that “you three undressed to impress” and likened the performance to “fire and ice”. Uh, okay. No criticism? Are we out of time or something?

Team Paso Doble’s scores: 9, 8, 9 = 26.

Okay, raging and booing audience, that was a fair score. It wasn’t a perfect routine, shirtlessness aside. There were synch issues all over the place and the hottie fireman act doesn’t excuse them.

So how goes to bootville? My guess is Melissa Gilbert or Roshon Fegan. But you never know. Tune in to “Dancing with the Stars” tomorrow night at 9 to see what happens. Or you can just check in with me. You know I’ll be watching.

Judging from the advertisements that line our email, all that women are attracted to are quick-fix facials, designer handbags for less or tarot card predictions. However inaccurate/accurate that might be, we also love walking in the rain, sunsets on a beach, chocolate fudge sundae for lunch, Roman Holiday, heritage structures, Pinterest, and hand-tossed pizzas. Then there is stock trading, Top Gear, politeness, Discovery Channel, a good read on a summer afternoon … you see, one of the best things about being a woman is not feeling the pressure of bowing to stereotypes, unlike men. If a woman’s fascination with vintage clothing is classy, so are her smooth skills at changing car tires. Right now though, let’s just look at the regular delights.

Women and Shopping

With women, things are obviously far from obvious, and when one has to talk about what attracts them, it doesn’t veer very far from the S-word. Yes, even a slight mention of shopping can have the most tired woman reach out for her bag, and they’re out and about in a jiffy. Although there are a few women who go to great lengths to avoid it like the plague, most of them can happily run through a week of boss-bestowed insults or unceremonious breakups, only on the hope of a weekend shopping spree.

To those of you who question the forever-lasting novelty of shopping, here’s the scientific dope – femdome’s obsession with the S-word is actually a relic of the bygone era when the men used to be hunters and the women were foragers.

Chemically speaking, shopping releases the very wonderful dopamine in the female brain that gives them a real high, akin to, well, a real high.

Women and Shoes

What is it with women and their crazy ambition to own a gazillion pairs of shoes?

It would really be too easy to blame this obsession on Cinderella, but then let’s just examine what we have here, shall we? So, you slide your foot in it, the smooth satin lining inside caressing your foot as you do so. It fits you like a second skin, elevates you, and lends you that alluring strut. What’s more, it beautifies you in about five seconds, and never makes you look fat. These instant mood elevators are individually crafted for every woman, and have the power to make or break any outfit, designer or not. They can be conversation starters, inspire fetishes, and are femininity boosters. And to top it all, they can be used as weapons to shoo away unwanted attention.

Has all the above satisfactorily answered your question?

Women and Makeup

This one’s easy. Makeup is that one magical thing which quite literally holds the power to transform a woman; whether the transformation is for better or worse can be discussed on another day.

To the uninitiated, makeup can simply be overwhelming. If you have to work hard to wear makeup that makes you look glamorous, you work twice as hard to wear makeup that gives you a makeup-free look. While the advocates of the natural look can have the luxury of reading the paper every morning, the wand brandishing divas are furiously donning layers of paint in order to get bigger eyes/shapely noses/sculpted cheeks, and what have you. Be it men or women, the quest for looking good has been imbibed into the human psyche quite naturally.

And this is really the reason why women should never justify their need for anything that makes them look nice, be it insect venom facials or fish pedicures.

Women and Jewelry

Ah! It would be a crime not to mention Marilyn Monroe’s declaration about women’s special friendship with diamonds right at the beginning, and the rest will be self-explanatory. Not trying to cut down on words here, but is there anything else which explains a woman’s fascination with sparklers more than this song from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?

Going further, nothing screams status for a woman other than these stones. And this is the weapon they choose to elevate their status among other women; not the Gucci handbag, not the Vivienne Westwood dress, not the Jimmy Choos on her feet.

Showing off is a joy we are all familiar with, gender notwithstanding. Guys, think of it as “my Aston Martin One-77″ against “your Ferrari Enzo”, and you’ll get the picture.

Women and Clothing

Female vanity works in mysterious ways. Stereotypes force us to believe that the female mind feels that she can never have enough LBDs/skinny or boyfriend pants. On investigating further, one feels hard-pressed to know why the men never have to justify their obsession with cars or gadgets. But the mere mention of a woman who skips dinner for a month to buy that Hermès scarf she so desires, raises instant outrage.

Coming back to women’s clothing fixation, you could connect this with the pleasurable act of preening and the desire to look good. Blame it on self-gratification, or on the desire to be noticed, flattering attire is what does it for women. On the other hand, for every woman who’s clueless about statement skirts and structured jackets, there will be another who will have these in teal and jade, with separate accessories to match for each.

It really goes without saying that every woman is different, and to classify them all as clothes hoarding loonies would be asinine.

Women and Men

Okay, let me just say it. What choice do women have? Women getting attracted to men is a major natural order, and let’s stop being nasty about the hunter clan and look at reasons other than natural.

Well, umm …, there must be a few reasons. I’m sure there ought to be some reasons. Oh, right, here they are – some women choose to blame a man’s attractiveness on those fluctuating hormones, while the more serious ones claim temporary insanity.

Alright, seriously, it’s so hard to pinpoint the qualities that women find striking in a man. It could range from pheromones to facial hair (eeew, I know, but it’s true), from kindness to vulnerability, from salaries to inheritance, from commitment desires to openness … it is impossible to generalize.

To summarize, it isn’t really a good idea to break down and dissect what is really a beautiful and natural process called ‘attraction’.

When we are asked to speak of what attracts us, we usually tend to fall headfirst into the generalization trap. For scores of women who would nod in agreement to every obsession mentioned here, there will be a whole other lot turning their noses away from it. As a woman or a man, it all comes down to realizing where our happiness lies, and pursuing it without any traces of inhibition.

The social network also reported its financial figures for the quarter ended March 31, revealing that revenue rose compared with the prior-year period, but costs and expenses saw a hefty increase, resulting in lower net income for the quarter.

There was no official date for the IPO in the S-1 update, but reports last week pegged May 17 as the target date.

Here are some statistics from the fourth amendment to Facebook’s S-1:

Facebook’s revenue for the first quarter of 2012 was $ 1.058 billion, up 44.7 percent compared with $ 731 million in the year-earlier quarter.

Total costs and expenses for the company soared to $ 677 million in the first quarter of 2012, nearly double the first-quarter-2011 total of $ 343 million (up 97.4 percent).

Net income of $ 205 million for the period was down 12 percent from $ 233 million in the first quarter of 2011.

For the full year of 2011, revenue was $ 3.711 billion, compared with $ 1.974 billion in 2010, and $ 777 million in 2009.

Total costs and expenses were $ 1.955 billion in 2011, versus $ 942 million in 2010, and $ 515 million in 2009.

Net income was exactly $ 1 billion for full-year 2011, up from $ 606 million in 2010, and $ 229 million in 2009.

Facebook mobile products tallied 488 million MAUs in March 2012.

The daily average number of likes and comments during the first quarter was 3.2 billion.

Facebook had 526 million daily active users in March 2012, up 41 percent from 372 million DAUs in March 2011.

As of March 31, 2012, there were more than 125 billion friend connections on the social network.

As we said earlier, today’s amendment marked the fourth revision to Facebook’s S-1.

In the first S-1 revision, filed Feb. 8, the social network revealed the details of its exclusivity agreement with game developer Zynga in explaining how 12 percent of Facebook’s revenues come from Zynga.

The second S-1 revision, filed March 8, confirmed details that had already been made public, such as Facebook doubling its line of credit, obtaining an additional bridge loan, and expanding the team of banks working on the IPO.

And S-1 revision No. 3, filed March 27, disclosed Facebook’s acquisition of 750 patents (http://allfacebook.com/aol-patents-microsoft_b86934) from IBM.

Apple’s next generation iPhone is rumored to use a new display panel technology that could make the device not only thinner but lighter too. The panel technology which is called in-cell touch is currently being rolled out by Sharp and Toshiba. The rumors come from sources in Apple’s current supply chain.

An improvement in yield rates of the in-cell touch panels at Sharp and TMD has persuaded Apple to choose to cooperate with Japan-based panel makers, the sources noted. The adoption of the in-cell touch panels, if realized, will also have a significant impact on the operations of Apple’s current touch panel suppliers TPK Holdings and Wintek, which are specialized in the production of glass on glass touch solutions currently, said the sources.

Current iPhone capacitive screens require a touchscreen to be fitted outside of the LCD, this means an additional layer of sensing glass which of course increases the thickness but also adds an extra step in the lamination process. Should Apple choose to use this new in-cell technology, it would offer better yield rates, reduced manufacturig costs as well as slimmer and lighter devices.
